The school year is filled with lots of learning every day. During the summer kids get a break and get to spend their days focused on other things. As a teacher, I value this break for my students and my own kids. It’s an important part of childhood. However, over the break there is often a lot of information and skills that are lost. Avoid this summer slide when kids are young with the Best Kindergarten Summer Review Packet.

All of the activities that you will find in this resource are curriculum based and it is a great way to give kids a head start as they head into grade 1. The resource also includes pages for American and Canadian learners. The spelling and coins featured can be either the Canadian or American content. Print whichever pages you need.

Since children doing the booklet are quite young, working with your child each day is ideal. Some children may only need help reading and understanding the questions, however, you may find some questions children need your support in answers. Being available to children as they work through the pages is important because it’s the ideal time to reteach any skills that your child doesn’t know or any skill that they are not confident with yet.

You may feel that only spending 10 minutes a day can’t be effective, but ten minutes is more than most kids spend. Those five to ten minutes keep math skills fresh and children are challenged to do some basic skills when they are otherwise not learning new concepts. As I teacher, I suggest to add some daily reading and learning in everyday life to get the best results. Use the pages and the skills shown in the packet to help you notice these concepts in real life.
For example, after doing the money pages, take a trip to the grocery store and purchase one item with your child for them to see and understand the cost of the item. They can even count out some coins and pay for the item. Find geometric shapes everywhere you go and ask children if they can identify them. Mixing learning into your everyday is the best way to reinforce skills without overwhelming children.
By the end of the summer, you will know that your child has kept various skills sharp by reinforcing them. You child will hopefully enter grade one with more confidence and easy when they are taught the skills again that they worked on in the summer.
