As children learn to read, introducing various activities and learning opportunities is important. There are lots of great ways to make learning to read fun and engaging for kids. In my classroom, we do lots of hands-on activities for letter recognition and phonics, but paper and pencil work is also valuable. I created this printable collection of the best free sight words printable activities.
Kids love doing word searches, however, for most young children in preschool and kindergarten who are still learning to recognize letters and reading, word searches can be very challenging. Words go right to left, diagonally and even down to up and it can be very confusing for young learners.
This free word search and the whole collection of first words are created with young learners in mind. The words only go left to right and down. Kids will love finding each of the words on the list!

It’s a great way for children to practice letter recognition as they search for each of the letters in the words. The lists progress from the top ten first words featured in this free printable word search and progress to more challenging words in the final list of 1000 words.
I use these sight word, word searches in my classroom with children through the year. If you are going to use the page over and over, a great option is to laminate the page or put it in a transparent pocket. The word search can then be use multiple times. Children can use a dry erase marker and find each of the words. When they’re done, they can wipe off the marks and the page is ready to be used again by another child.
Since word searches tend to be a new activity for young children, the first few searches may be more challenging. However, once children do a few of the pages, they become easier and more and more fun!

Each of the word searches also include a simple picture. When kids finish their word search they can spend a minute and color the image to fully complete the page.
