The first few days of a new school year are always filled with excitement, but also nerves, from both the kids and educators. For me, when I have a great plan and activities that I know my students will enjoy I feel more at ease and enjoy these first days as everyone settles in. Doing review is a great way to start the year, especially with math. I created the Best Back to School 1st Grade Math Review and it was the perfect way to review kindergarten concepts and ease kids back into learning.
When teaching Grade 1 it was important to me to review key concepts my students learned in kindergarten. This review also served as a way for me to assess any gaps in my students learning. Each page covers a different concept that was taught in kindergarten. The pages serve as a quick and easy reminder of these concepts before moving forward to more challenging skills introduced in first grade.
The pages are bright and colorful to keep kids engaged. However, within the resource, the pages are also available in black and white. The black and white pages are ideal if you are printing for a full class and want to save on ink. Students can also color the pictures on the page after they complete the work. It’s an easy way to keep kids engaged while everyone finishes.

Best Back to School 1st Grade Math Review
When you open the resource, you will find the pages divided into several sections. The sections are:
- Color Pages (American)
- Black and White Pages (American)
- Color (Canadian)
- Black and White (Canadian)
As a teacher, I know how important it is to have a resource that directly targets what I am teaching. Pictures of coins that children do not use is not as valuable. The resource includes an American and Canadian version so that students are given the best resource. Coins and spelling within the resource reflect this.
There are 15 worksheets to print and to use for your review. This is intentionally a small amount of pages because it is intended as a review for the first few days, or weeks. The content is intentional and touches on many of the key concepts from kindergarten math.

The resource also includes a certificate once the book is complete as well as two cover pages for the worksheets. If you are using the resource for the first few weeks of school or as a summer review for children about to start grade 1, there are separate cover pages you can put on the worksheets. The file also contains the answers for each page.

The worksheets are carefully written and selected to review core concepts taught in kindergarten. They also touch on important skills they will learn in the coming year. Ideally each page is covered and worked through together. Review of these skills is essential.
Math Review of Kindergarten Concepts
Although I used the resource for review for the first few weeks of grade 1, you can also use the worksheets during the summer with kids before they start first grade. Children in kindergarten benefit from this resource to avoid the summer slide. Children can start with one page a day a few weeks before returning to school and sharpen their skills as they do the review. There is a printable cover page for the worksheets that can be attached to the pages in place of the “First Days of First Grade” cover page.

Alternatively, you can choose to use the pages throughout the year as a review when you begin each new concept in grade 1. Before you begin coding use the page that addresses this skill. The review pages don’t have to be covered together at the beginning of the year. It’s up to you how you can best use this resource in your classroom or homeschool.
Print a review sheet for each child in your classroom and aim to work through at least one page together each day. Some of the pages will be easier for children, whereas others will prove challenging. This is important information for educators as you plan your program. If all students find one or a few of the pages easy and complete them quickly, you may not have to spend as long on that concept in grade 1. This gives you more time for the concepts students had difficulty completing.

Once you’ve done all of the review, you can move onto all of the new concepts in Grade 1 that build on the core skills touched on in this review. For a full year of math worksheets check out this first grade math curriculum book.
