Benefits of Scavenger Hunts
Scavenger hunts are a great way to take learning beyond the classroom walls. Many hunts, like this one take kids from indoors to outside searching for each item on the list. Kids love to get up and moving!
If you choose to do several hunts, and a hunt for each season, they are a great way to encourage children to notice different things in their environment that weren’t there the previous season.
The first scavenger hunt I did with my class, was a hit, but they weren’t able to do the activity independently. There were no pictures beside the words so children, who were still learning to read couldn’t read each word. This scavenger hunt was created specifically for younger children. Each word also has a picture of the item children are searching for. It’s a great way to help with decoding of words as well as recognizing items and matching them to the picture.

Setting Up Your Scavenger Hunt
There is little to no prep involved in this scavenger hunt. Simply print as many copies of the page as you need. The hunt is available in black and white as well as color. The color copy is appealing to kids, and the black and white page is great for kids to color when they finish their scavenger hunt.

Print the hunt and give it to kids or attach in a clipboard. Clipboards are ideal if you’ll be venturing outside to do your hunt. Give kids a marker or pencil to check off each item as they find it.

Since I do scavenger hunts so often with my students, I have started laminating the scavenger hunts so that I can use them again and again. Children check the items off with a dry erase marker and then erase them all when they are done.
Spring Activity for Kids
I love using scavenger hunts in my classroom with our older buddies. They are great to help the younger children find each of the items. You can choose to give each child their own copy of the hunt, they can work with a partner or in groups.
If there is an item, or two on the list that you know kids are not going to be able to find, or you know does not exist where you are doing the hunt. There are a few things you can do so that your scavenger hunt is still a success.

One option is to print pictures of each of the items on the list and place them around the space that children will be completing the hunt. You can also allow kids to search through books, or even on t.v. in order to find each of the items.
If you are using the free spring scavenger hunt at home with your own children, the hunt works wonderfully to bring with you on a walk or hike during spring. Searching for the items during a walk through a forest add a lot to the experience. It also encourages children to look closely at the world around them.
