Winter Escape Room Materials + Set Up
Everything you need to play this game is available in the resource. No additional materials or supplies are needed. Most of the pages can simply be printed and they are ready to use. A few pages require some simple cutting to prepare the clue.
All of the instructions for the set up and printing are included in the printable. Most are described below. The pages are set up to be printed double sided. Make sure to follow the printing instructions so that the game prints properly.
The game is included in color and black and white.
Mini Envelopes Game Board
Once you have printed the pages, you will have nine mini envelope pages with a number on the front and writing/a clue on the back.
Fold these pages to create envelopes with the snowflake and number on the front, and the face and clue on the inside. These are then placed on the Winter Wonderland Mission page in any order.
You will also have a welcome page and six pages of clues. The clues each have a wintery image on the front and a puzzle on the inside. These pages are folded along the dotted line.
There are two puzzles that require a bit of cutting. The first clue is to be cut into four separate triangles.
Place the triangles with the letter with the large triangle on the inside and mittens on the outside. They can be attached with a paper clip. (An alternative version of this page is also included in the resource with blanks for you to fill in your own math questions.)
The other clue to cut out is optional if you want to use it. One of the clues includes a crossword. If younger children are playing the game, they may need help with the spelling of the words. If you feel your players will benefit/need this list, it is available to include with the folded letter with the moose on it. However, using this list also makes the clue very easy.
Once you have all of these pages printed and prepared, you are ready to start your escape room game!
Playing the Game
Once each puzzle is solved, a number will be revealed. Players must then match the number to one of the mini envelopes. They then open the corresponding mini envelope and read the clue inside. If players have correctly identified the right mini envelope/number then they will directed to open once of the folded letters which includes their next puzzle.
On the back of each folded page, players will also notice that there are instructions for each puzzle. For older players, challenge them to figure out each clue without using these instructions, however, if players are stuck or young, the instructions are available for them to use.
Party Game Set Up
You can keep the game simple and just print the clues, set them up and put them on a table and begin playing. However, you can also add to your escape room experience by creating a themed room and adding a lot of excitement to the game.
Simple things like decorations, and music can add a lot to the excitement. Use a snowy table cloth or have a few wintery decorations set out for the game. You can create snowflakes and hang them from the ceiling or have a special wintery drink for everyone to enjoy while playing.
Although there are no extra materials required to complete the room, you can provide players with pencils and paper to help work out the puzzles.
A time limit of one hour often works well for this game. It adds to the challenge of the game and players will feel a greater sense of success if they complete it in time. However, you can choose to not put any time restrictions and just let players work their way through the game at their own pace. This is recommended for young and/or inexperienced players.
Winter Escape Room Clue #1
Players will start the game by noticing the board with the nine mini envelopes, six folded pages and a welcome letter. Players will start by reading the welcome letter.
The welcome letter describes the task at hand for the players and gives players some instructions on how to play. Once players take a closer look they will also notice that there are a few words that are in bold. These words are: “Start at 48“. This tells players that their first number is 48. They will then open the corresponding mini envelope with the number 48 on the front.
Once players open the envelope with #48, they will find the clue, “Go to a warm winter drink“. Players quickly look for the folded page with an image of a cup of hot chocolate and open it for their next puzzle.
Winter Escape Room Puzzle #2
Inside the hot chocolate page there is an alphabet code. At the bottom of the page is a line of images that are also found throughout the alphabet code. Players must find the match of each of these images and the corresponding letter in the alphabet squares.
As players look and carefully match each picture with a letter, a number is slowly spelled out. Once all of the images have been matched, players will be given the number thirty-seven. They then open the mini envelope with the 37 on the front.
Winter Escape Room #3
Inside envelope #37, players are directed to, “Head to the frozen water that falls from the sky in winter“. Players check the remaining pages and open the one with the snowflake on the front. Inside players discover a maze.
As players move through the maze, they will notice that they have to go through each of the five images. Players need to keep track of the order they go through the images.
You have to cross through the penguin, tree, boots, mug and mittens in order to get to the end. Once players have this combination of five images, they can match them to the images on the previous alphabet page. Once matched, the images spell out the next clue which is FORTY.
Winter Escape Room Puzzle #4
Players quickly look for the next number clue, which is inside the mini envelope #40. The clue tells players to check the card that matches the description: “These will keep your hands toasty”. Players open the folded page with the mittens on the front.
Inside, players discover a large triangle made up of four smaller triangles and two blank circles with a question mark indicated on the top. There are also four cut out images of triangles, each with three math questions.
This puzzle can be quite challenging, but it offers a great opportunity for players to problem solve and work together. Players start by solving each math problem and print the answers on the triangles. Players then have to match equal sides/answers and place the four triangles together on the folded page with the large triangle with all matching numbers touching.
This puzzle requires players to not only get all of the answers correct, but also manipulate the triangles to create one large triangle.
Once all of the shapes are in place, players take the two top answers, on the triangles placed on top of the white ovals on the folded page. These numbers work out to be 8 and 10, they are then added together to get 18. This is the code number for the next mini envelope.
Alternative Puzzle for Clue #4
If the math problems on the above triangles are too challenging, or not challenging enough, an alternative is included for this puzzle. Four triangles with blank ovals are included so that you can print in your own math equations.
This works really well to create really simple problems for young children, such as 1+1 or you can add other more challenging equations for older kids. If you are using the escape room in the classroom you can add math problems from your current unit.
Winter Escape Room Puzzle #5
Inside mini envelope #18 it tells players to, “Check the animal that rhymes with goose“. Players quickly open the folded letter with the moose on the front to reveal a crossword.
If you choose to include the words for the crossword (the cut out is included in the resource), then attach it inside this folded letter.
Players work through each of the clues to find the word that fits each description. Once all of the words are printed, players check which letters are in the blue boxes. Players are left with the letters, ITRNEHET. Players are then challenged to unscramble the letters to find their next number.
After players unscramble the letters, they find the number THIRTEEN. Players then quickly find the mini envelope with the number 13 on it.
Winter Escape Room Printable Puzzle #6
Once envelope number thirteen is opened, players will check the folded letter with the picture of the skate on it.
This puzzle includes images similar to the alphabet code clue, however, the puzzle is entirely different. The puzzle includes a code at the bottom for players to follow. Players start at the snowflake in the bottom left corner and follow the instructions step by step.
As players move from one spot to another, they eventually end up on the number 51.
Winter Escape Room Game Clue #7
The final puzzle is found after players open mini envelope #51 that instructs players to “Visit Frosty“. Upon opening the folded letter with the picture of the snowman on the front, players find a puzzle with words and numbers.
Players draw a straight line from each word on the left side of the page to the ending of the word on the right. Players will create a wintery compound word.
Once each word has been made by drawing a line, players will notice that all of the lines go through one specific number in the middle. For this puzzle the number is 55. This is the number for the final mini envelope.
Final Completion Certificate
Players will know that they have successfully completed the winter escape room game when they open this final envelope. The note inside tells players congratulations!
A full page printable escape room certificate is also included in the resource. You can print copies for players to keep and take home to celebrate their win!
