As a parent, I enjoy watching my children be engaged and excited about an activity. As a teacher, I see lots of benefits to escape rooms, such as:

  • Problem Solving Skills
  • Thinking Outside the Box
  • Teamwork
  • Working Under Pressure
  • Hands-On Experience
  • Increased Attention to Detail
  • Following Directions
  • Decoding Skills
  • Organizational Skills
  • Critical Thinking

The great thing about escape rooms is that children are learning and developing these skills, but they are so engaged in the game that they don’t realize that they are learning at the same time.

If you are looking for a quick and engaging new activity for your family, I recommend Escape Room Geeks printable escape rooms for kids. I love the idea of families doing escape rooms together at home, and children working on them in the classroom. Find an escape room that looks appealing to you!

Printable escape rooms for kids are perfect for:

  • Family Game Nights
  • Birthday Parties
  • Classroom Celebrations
  • Special Occasions
  • Playdates
  • Activity for a Babysitter
  • Weekend Activity with Family or Friends

I have purchased and been given several escape room games over the years. We always love working through the puzzles and racing against the clock. However, sometimes the puzzles are too challenging for young kids and we don’t finish within the suggested time. Which is okay and a great challenge, but can be a frustrating for kids.

However, one of my favorite things about Escape Room Geeks game Houdini’s Secret Room is that it is created for kids and families. We finished in less than an hour and my kids were beyond excited that they successfully escaped and with time to spare!

Setting up the Escape Room

I chose to set a theme in our room by using a black tablecloth and some tea light lanterns. It sets the tone, adds to the experience and builds excitement. However, it is not necessary in order to do the escape room.

The Escape Room Geeks kit includes the puzzles, set up, solution and some fun extra pages, such as the escape room certificate to give out when players complete the room. You can also print invitations and print bonus parts of some puzzles.

Preparing the escape room puzzles only took a few minutes for a little bit of cutting and getting a few materials ready for players, such as glue and scissors. The graphics and pictures are beautiful and very engaging for children. My kids loved looking at all of the images on each puzzle.

You will need to set out some scissors and tape or glue for players to use throughout the game.

Another extra feature of these printable escape rooms for kids, and one of my kids favorite thing about this activity, is that the game includes an app that aligns with the game. You can get hints, and key in your solutions right onto your phone.

The music and added features of the app adds a feeling of being in a ‘real’ escape room. This was one of our favorite features of the game.

Once you have your printable escape room puzzles ready, set your clock, or start the game app, and you have one hour to solve all the puzzles to escape in time.

Ready, Set, Escape!

There are three challenges for players to work through and solve. Each challenge has a few pages that players have to figure out and then put together to solve the puzzle.

The puzzles consist of cut and paste, matching, mazes and much more. They are all different and take different skills to solve.

If you have purchased other escape room games before, but have found that they were too challenging, and intended for an older audience, this printable escape room will feel different. It is a kids game. The puzzles are able to be solved, largely independently by kids. We did do the escape room as a family, however, we basically let the kids solve the puzzles which they loved.

This is my favorite thing about it because although my kids had to work to solve the puzzles, and sometimes they were wrong, they were able to go back and figure all of the puzzles out and solve the game in time. It was challenging, but exciting and fun, not frustrating.

Bonus Escape Room Puzzle Pages

If you want to add something special to your escape room and make it more hands-on, there is an extra file included with some pages to set a few of the clues up in a different way. I used a treasure box and a lock to secure one of our clues.

When players solve the previous puzzle and get a 3 digit number, they use the code to open the lock. This can alternatively be done using the game app, but it is great to have options so that you can create the game the best way for you!

Some of these extra pages can be used if there is an adult only supervising the kids playing the game and not actually playing themselves. (Solutions are given in order to set up some of these special pages.)

Alternatively, the game can be done so that everyone can play, including the person who set it up, without anyone knowing the solutions. The instructions are clear, so you can choose which way works for you.

Printable Escape Room for Young Kids

Wooka Booka Island

If you have young children who want to get in on the fun, Escape Room Geeks also has a printable escape room called “Wooka Booka Island”. It is targeted to 5-8 year old’s. My kids are a bit older, but loved this escape room game.

There was so much laugher and excitement as they played that I wanted to share this escape room with you as well!

The difference with Wooka Booka Island is that the escape room puzzles are basically interactive games. So get ready for a intense game of rock, paper, scissors, a scavenger hunt around the house and a pen drop game that even I couldn’t help but try out.

This game is made with young players in mind. It is hands-on and engaging for little ones. However, kids still get the experience of the escape room because each puzzle leads to the next and the story line is really cute.

A few things my kids had to say about Wooka Booka Island: “I love the games you get to play. It makes it more fun!” and “My favorite are the pictures. I love how colorful they are.”

While playing, I kept thinking about how great this game would be in a classroom, for pre-k, kindergarten or the primary grades as a small group center. It’s a great learning activity that even young escape room fans will feel successful while doing.
