I love using choice board with children because it gives them options. They can read the different squares on the board and then choose which one to do. Kids can choose one, or all of the activities. It’s a simple way to make the day special for Dad. It also gives kids choice in how they want to celebrate the day, and Dad. It also gives children choice, if there is an activity or two that you don’t feel fits your Dad’s interest. You can simply skip it!

The activities on the board are simple and generally require very few materials. Some of the activities can be done ahead of time, such as creating a card for Dad. These can be given to Dad throughout the day or in the morning for a fun surprise. Some of the ideas are activities to do together during the day.

The choice board activities include:

  • Create a coupon book for your Dad.
  • Make breakfast in bed for Dad.
  • Create a mini golf putt in your house.
  • Write a list of 10 things you love about your Dad.
  • Make a #1 Dad Medal.
  • Give your Dad a hug on the hour, every hour during the day.
  • Make your Dad a superhero mask.
  • Paint a rock for your Dad.
  • Help make your Dad his favorite meal for dinner.
  • Draw a portrait of your Dad.
  • Go for a walk with your Dad.
  • Create a card for your Dad.

There’s no right or wrong way to do the ideas with your Dad. Kids are great at coming up with their own ideas and how they want to interpret the ideas.

Using Your Choice Board

A great way to use the board is to look through the options before Father’s Day and decide where you want to start and do first. You may only do one of the activities, or you can try and work your way through all of the activities over the course of the day.

Another option if you have a few children looking to do something special for Dad is to have them each choose one to start and rotate through the activities and doing it for Dad.

Alternatively, you can have your Dad choose which activity they would like for you to do. This really becomes Dad’s day! You can even use the board as a tic-tac-toe style game and try to fill a row or column.

As a teacher, I love sending how printables and activities that children can use at home. This is a simple board that kids can use at home and it gives families some ideas and options.

Family Activities

My favorite thing about the board is that the focus is on time, not money. The choices on the board encourage children to think about their special person and spend time with them on Father’s Day. Versus an expensive present that doesn’t require time spent together. From young children to older teens, the ideas work for families.

If you have the option to do the activities together, and even with day, even the art and written activities, it’s a wonderful way for families to spend time together and for Dads to be part of the kids process and their thoughts as they create for them.

After completing the choice board, encourage kids to talk to Dad about what his favorite activities were. Which ones did he like best and why? Kids can even make another choice board, filled with their own ideas for next year. Or, why wait for next year and aim to do all of the activities together before next Father’s Day.
