Kids love scavenger hunts. Whether they’re looking for specific items while on a nature walk or solving riddles to find a final prize, there’s always a lot of excitement with the challenge of a scavenger hunt.
My students loved this winter scavenger hunt and it gave me a chance to take their learning beyond our classroom walls. We walked throughout the school and even outdoors to find each of the items on the list.
Winter is also the perfect time for more exciting and hands-on activities for kids, like a Free Winter Escape Room Game and the popular collection of 43 Easy Winter STEM Activities.

To do your scavenger hunt, all you need to do is print a copy for each child doing the scavenger hunt. Older children will likely be able to complete the hunt independently. If you have younger children doing the hunt, you can have them work with a partner or you can do it as a group.
This hunt has been created with younger children in mind. Beside each item word, children will find an image of the item. This helps young and beginner readers decode the page and work more independently.
Completing the Themed Scavenger Hunt
Once you’ve given everyone their page, you’re ready to start the hunt. Children can search anywhere to find each of the items. Things like the hat are going to be simple for kids to find, whereas things like a sled may be more challenging.
Remind children that whatever item they find does not have to be identical to the one pictured. For example the sled they find doesn’t have to be like the wooden looking one on the page. A round sled or toboggan will also work.

Also, as children do the hunt, they can search for the items virtually anywhere. They may be able to find an item in a book or even on television. Let kids be creative in what they find. If there is an item on the list that you know is going to prove impossible, you can print a copy of the winter item and post it somewhere in your school or home. Children can then find the image and count it on their page.
After each item is found, in any order, children will check it off beside the word. Once all items have been found children have completed their hunt.
One great option with this scavenger hunt if you will have several children, or groups doing the hunt, is to laminate the page and attach it to a clipboard. Use dry erase markers and then you can reuse the page over and over. It also works well as a center in a classroom.

I like using the colored copy of the page when I laminate. It’s colorful and makes it engaging for kids. The black and white copy is great when each child is completing their own page. Once they have found everything on the list, they can color the items to complete their page.
