The puzzles vary in difficulty, but they are created for younger players. They are simplified and contain less ‘tricks’ for children to solve. Although the game is created with young children in mind, and intended to be able to be solved by kids, an adult will likely need to read the instructions for each clue before children will be able to solve them.
You can prepare the clues and either leave them all visible on the table, or place them in envelopes to create more mystery and excitement as each clue is opened and revealed.
There are a series of six puzzles in the game. Print each puzzle, in color and follow the set-up instructions below. If you are using the pages with multiple groups, laminating the pages is a great idea so that they can be used again and again.

Print each of the pages single sided. You will need scissors to prepare/cut some of the puzzles, envelopes and a pencil for players to solve the clues. You don’t need any additional materials like locks or keys.
Each puzzle has the puzzle number on the page as well as a colored key. When each puzzle is solved, players will be left with a letter of the alphabet. This letter is then recorded on the recording sheet included in the printable file with the puzzles. Point out the colored key to help young players to then match the key with the corresponding lock on the recording page.
Pages need to be printed in color. Some of the clues will not work in black and white.
Setting Up Your Escape Room Game
Escape Room Puzzle #1
The first puzzle is a welcome letter. Print the puzzle and leave it visible for players to find and look at first. There is no other set up required for this puzzle.

Puzzle Set up #2
The second puzzle includes two pages, each with a set of letters from the alphabet (upper case and lower case letters). Each page needs to be cut on the dotted line so that each letter is separate from the other letters.

Once they are cut, you can mix them together, or keep the upper case and lower case letters separate. Players will work to match the letters. Place all of the pieces in an envelope or plastic bag to keep them all together. Make sure to include the instruction page with the letters.
Escape Room Puzzle #3
Puzzle 3 requires players to create a color wheel. Cut the purple section away from the three color blobs at the bottom of the page. Each of the color blobs can then be cut out so that you have the purple page with the red and blue blobs as well as three separate color blobs (yellow, purple and orange). Place the page and blobs together in an envelope.

Printable Escape Room Clue #4
The fourth puzzle simple needs to be printed. There is no additional preparation required.

Free Escape Room Clue #5
The fifth puzzle includes a variety of cards to cut out. Cut along the dotted lines so that you have ten cards with numbers 1-10 and ten cards with pictures of keys. Cut out each of these so you have a total of twenty cards. Also cut out the instruction card and include it with the set of cards.

Free Family Game Puzzle #6
Cut out the sixth puzzle along the the dotted lines. You will be left with nine squares. Place the squares in a bag or envelope for this clue.

There are three other pages included in the file. Two of the pages are recording sheets. The letter that players are left with after solving each puzzle is recorded on this page. When the game is complete it will spell out a message for players.
I used the game with my kindergarten class and created a recording sheet for us and shared it with the resource. Both Kindergarten Escape Room and Escape Room for Young Kids recording sheets are included. Use whichever is the best fit for your group.

There is also an escape room completion certificate included for players. You can print as many copies as you need to give children once they finish the game.

Once you have set up all of your puzzles, you’re ready to play. Place the welcome letter out on the table and the other clues either in envelopes or visible on the table for players to use as they solve each puzzle.
Solutions
Players will start with the welcome letter and read through it to learn about how to play the game and the first puzzle to solve. The clue tells players to “Start by connecting the letters to make the word SECRET”.
Players will then notice a bunch of random letters in circles on the welcome letter. Players will start with the letter S and draw a straight line to the letter E and then C-R-E-T. Once all of these letters are connected, a large letter Y will be formed.

Players then find the orange lock on the recording sheet and print the letter Y.
Printable Escape Room Game Puzzle #2
The third clue tells players to find the match for each of the letters.

Players begin matching each of the upper case letters with the same lower case letter. However, one of the letter is missing. Once players complete the alphabet, they will find that the letter O does not have a match.

Players have then found the second letter to print on the recording sheet.
Free Escape Room Puzzle #4
The fourth clue requires players to have some understanding of a color wheel. Players must take the three cut out colored blobs and place them on the page. Once placed, one of the blobs underneath will be left blank. This is the next letter for players to record.

If the children doing the escape room do not understand color wheels, encourage them to place the missing blobs beside the color that appears closest to the one beside it. For example the purple is similar to the blue and red and orange is most similar to the red.
Once complete players will be left with the letter U to print onto the recording sheet.

The fourth puzzle is a page that requires players to look at the variety of photos and complete something like a maze through the images. Starting at the letter Aa players then move to the image that starts with the letter B and so on throughout the alphabet.
There are several zebras on the page and this is the final letter players will end with. Beside each zebra there is a letter. Once players find their way through the maze, they will end on a zebra and an associated letter. This is a great puzzle to encourage young children’s phonics. They are required to carefully sound out each picture to figure out the beginning sound.

Players will move from Aa to bell, cheese, die, elephant, fish, giraffe, heart, igloo, jellyfish, key, leaf, mushroom, nest, octopus, pig, queen, robot, sun, turtle, umbrella, volcano, worm, x-ray, yo-yo and zebra. Beside the final zebra is the letter W. Players will record this on the final recording sheet.
Escape Game Puzzle #5
Puzzle five is a set of numbers and images. All of the number cards have a matching picture card – except one.

Players have to count the number of keys on each card and find its match with the number card. Once all of the cards have been matched, players will find that there is no image with eight keys. There are two cards with seven keys, but none with eight. This tells players that the letter on the number 8 card is their next letter for the recording sheet (i).
Free Escape Room Puzzle #6
As players look through the puzzle cards for the sixth puzzle they will notice that there are lines and paths on each card. The instructions tell players to create the path by connecting the colored key to the matching colored lock.

Once each of the locks and keys have been matched, a path or circle will be created. However, one piece does not fit into the path. This card has a letter N on it. This is the next letter to print on the recording sheet.

Once each of the puzzles have been completed and a letter printed on the recording sheet, players will notice that they have spelled out their final message – YOU WIN! Players then know that they have been successful in completed and ‘escaping’ from the game.
Escape Room Completion Certificate
Once players have finished the puzzles, you can fill out the completion certificate. Each child can receive a certificate or you can fill one out for the group. If you can fill one out for each child, it’s a great way page for kids to take home to tell their families about.

There’s a lot of learning and excitement that happens during escape rooms. This game is a great way for children to feel successful as they play with the puzzles made just for them.
Don’t worry if there are a few puzzles that children find challenging and you offer some help. It’s a good idea to let children try a few strategies before jumping in, but you may find sometimes a little clue or help is needed. It’s your escape room so you can run it anyway you feel is best.
