Many people hold onto keepsakes from a child’s birth and special items over the years. It is wonderful to look back on these items and the memories they hold. As a parent, and teacher, I love finding activities that create hold onto these special memories. Below I’m sharing one of my favorite activities to do with my kids, and students throughout the year. This Free Printable Time Capsule can be printed and prepared easily. You then have a project ready to be completed each month.
By the end of the year, you have a beautiful booklet, full of memories and your child’s work. The booklet starts with simple, short pages and progresses to more printing and more sections to fill out. This is ideal for young children and for classroom use.

Free Printable Time Capsule Materials
Everything you need is included in the free printable file. You can download it at the bottom of this page. Within the file there are several versions you can you. Choose whichever fits your needs.
The booklet is included with color pages, for children to simply fill out and draw in. The flipbook is also included in black and white. This copy encourages the child to color the pages and images to truly complete it themselves.
The printable pages are available in twelve month (January-December) as well as the school year (September-June). However, you can start the booklet any month, because part of the file is editable and you can type in the months before printing.
When I completed the booklet with my students at school, I loved using the full, twelve month time capsule. We would fill in ten of the months together at school, and then they got to continue working on it, to complete it, during the summer.
Free Printable Time Capsule Ideas
Each month, children record a few special things about their month, or life. Children must think about a special memory or event that happened during the month that stuck out for them. Each child in a class may have a different answer for this box, but it’s a great way to record things that mattered to them each month.
Once you have printed all of the pages, it does take a few minutes to prepare the flipbook. I have found the easiest is to stack all of the pages with the “My Time Capsule” page on the top. Staple along the top and then cut along the lines of each pages below the month name.
Once you have stapled and cut, you are ready for the whole year! This is a great activity to do on the first day of each month. Encourage kids to add details to their pictures and answers because they are more meaningful when you read them later.
The booklet can be kept in a bin with other special items. It’s also a great item for parents to hang onto as a complete record of their child’s year. Another option for the booklet if you complete it at school is to hang onto it until the child graduates and then give it to them at that time.
Monthly Memory Book
One of my favorite things about the time capsule being done piece by piece over the year is that it not only hold memories from each month, you can also see a child’s progress over the course of the year.
Simple things like a child’s printing, drawing and the details they add to their work tend to tell it’s own story each month. Children will look forward to completing the entries each month and they’ll love looking back at the months that they have already finished.
Each of the pages has children record something different about themselves, such as their shoe size and their favorite animal. Together these answers tell a story about the child and special things to remember years down the road.
