Free Christmas Pass the Parcel Game Materials

For this game, all you need are the printable riddles and a present. Each riddle tells where the gift is passed to each time. You can give any small present, like chocolates or a gift card. Another option is to hand make something for the winner to go home with.

There are a few ways you can play the game. Several options are listed below. Please note that there are two sets of the riddles included in the resource. The actual riddles are basically the same, but the way you play can be altered.

The two pages with the large gift images along the bottom and side are the riddles that one person will read to the group. They will read each riddle, then the gift will be passed, and the next clue is read.

Included in Resource

However, the last three pages in the resource include the riddles that can be cut out and and extra page to create your own riddles, if you wish. Cut each riddle out and place them in a container, hang onto the first riddle. The host will read the first riddle and give the youngest guest the present to start.

The youngest child then reaches into the container and chooses a riddle to read, and passes the parcel to the person who fits the description in the second riddle. The riddles are changed slightly so that the last riddle isn’t the end (since it can be drawn from the container at any point). If played this way, the last riddle in the container means it will be opened by the guest who fits the description of the riddle.

There may be a few riddles that describe a few people in the room. If this happens, the host can decide, or the group can vote, for who the winner is.

Once you’ve got the riddles printed and a present ready for the winner, your game is ready to be played.

The one who will read the riddles, starts with the present. Read the first riddle aloud:

Pass the gift after you read each rhyme.

Start with the youngest in the room today,

Give them the present, don’t delay.

The youngest person in the room is passed the gift. The host then reads the second clue: Next is the person with the most festive sweater. If there are a few, have a vote for which is better.

The rest of the riddles lead the present to the following places. If one of the riddles won’t work for your party, skip it and go onto the next riddle.

In the Most Comfortable Chair

Sitting Nearest to the Christmas Tree

Nearest Birthdate

Wearing the Most Red

Pass the Gift Two to the Right

First Guest Who Arrived

Longest Hair

Fanciest Nails

The Person to the Left of the Riddle Reader

Don’t request guests to sit, or stand in certain places. The game works best if guests don’t know what they’re about to play. Allow everyone to find a spot and then start the game.

Once you get to the final riddle, the gift is passed to the left of the host/person reading the riddles aloud. The gift then stops with this guest and they get to open, and keep the present.

The game is a great way to bring all of your guest together. The Free Christmas Pass the Parcel Game allows everyone, from grandparents to young children to be involved and easily play.

Free Christmas Pass the Parcel Game – Extra Ideas

The description above is the easiest and most straightforward way to play, however, you can play the game in different ways.

Pass the Gift Game – Multiple Wrapping

In the game described above, the gift is only unwrapped by the final person. In this version, you will wrap the gift multiple times. Each time the gift is passed to someone, they unwrap a layer.

The final person that the gift is passed to will know that they have won, because when they unwrap their layer, they will find the present.

You don’t have to wrap each layer to make the game work, but it can add to the engagement of the game as well.

Pass the Parcel Game – Multiple Winners

If you’re feeling really generous, this version of the game is a great way to share and give to your guests. Similar to the previous version of the game, each layer is wrapped. However, within each layer there is a small gift for the guest who unwrapped it.

For example, I wrapped an envelope with a small gift card into each layer. As people open a layer, if the gift is passed to them, they enjoy treat. The final present tends to be a bit bigger, but it’s up to you what to give.

Free Christmas Pass the Parcel Game – Wrapped Riddles

Another option for the game is to wrap each riddle within each layer. This is an option if you want players to be more involved and have guests read the riddles, versus the host running the game.

You can choose if you put a gift in each layer, or just the riddle. As players unwrap a layer, they will find, and read the next riddle.

However you choose to play the game, I’m sure your guests will love playing it together.
