The game can be printed and set up in minutes with no additional materials or supplies required. A completed certificate is included to fill out and give to players, or you can include a small treat or prize to give players when they complete the final puzzle.

The game is created to be simple enough that even children can play and it can be played in virtually any location. For another escape room idea check out a hands-on game for fall with the popular: Make Your Own Escape Room for Fall.

You will also need scissors to prepare the last puzzle. The rest of the pages are ready to play once printed.

You can add to the excitement of the fall escape room, by decorating the room players will be in. A fall table cloth, pumpkins and leaves are a simple way to build excitement and engagement.

You can choose to set a time limit on the game as well. I usually suggest one hour to complete the room, but you can give children as long as you want.

If you are using the game in the classroom, or if it will be used by various children, I suggest laminating the pages and using dry erase markers to solve the puzzles. This way you can reuse the puzzles.

Fall Escape Room Welcome Note

As players enter the room, they notice two pages. The first page tells players the rules to the game. Players must solve a series of puzzles and once each puzzle is solved, they will be left with a single word.

These words can be recorded on the “Where Are your Treats” page. If you have an older, or experienced group playing, you do not have to use this page.

Recording Sheet

Players quickly discover from the welcome page that all of their treats have been stolen! In order to get them back, they must solve all of the puzzles.

Halloween Escape Room Puzzle #1

Once the welcome letter has been read, players work to solve the alphabet code.

Each picture at the bottom matches a picture and letter in the alphabet chart. Players look at each image and find it in the chart above. Next, they print the corresponding letter on the line above the picture at the bottom.

Once each picture has been matched, players read the sentence that has been revealed. The puzzle clue is, “The first word clue is look.”

Players either remember their first word for their clue is “Look” or they print the wood on the recording sheet that they were given along with the welcome letter.

Fall Escape Room Puzzle #2

Once the second puzzle is solved, players open their third clue. The puzzle includes lots of fall pictures, such as pumpkins, apples and leaves! Players count the number of pumpkins, leaves, apples and sunflowers.

The puzzle also states that the “For the image you seek, there are six.” Once all of the items are counted, it becomes clear that the sunflowers are the image that there are six of. This gives players their second word, around and this word can be added to the recording sheet.

The next clue is a word search. Most kids will be excited to see this familiar activity and it is simple enough to solve, however, there is a twist.

Players race to find each of the words listed at the bottom of the word search. Once all of them have been found, players will notice that there are a few letters that were not highlighted. These three letters spell out the next word, “the”.

Fall Escape Room Clue #4

The fourth puzzle is a collection of pumpkin shaped images. Each of the pumpkins are a little bit different from each other. Players read the descriptions at the bottom of the page and cross out any pumpkins that fit the description.

For example, the first clue says, “The pumpkin does not have a frown.” Cross out all of the pumpkins that have a frown. Which is only the pumpkin that says “third”.

Once all of the descriptions have been read and pumpkins have been crossed out, players will be left with just one pumpkin. This is the pentagon shaped pumpkin in the third row.

Below the pumpkin is the word “Main”. Add this word to the recording sheet, which now reads, “Look around the main”…

Printable Puzzle #5

The final clue needs to quickly be cut out like a puzzle. These pieces can be placed inside a baggie, envelope or even a folded sheet of paper. The shapes are several half circles and rectangles.

An instruction card with the pieces tells players to, “Match the pictures. Look at the path from all angles.”

Players look at each of the pieces and find the matching pictures on the other pictures. Set these matching images together to create a “path”. Once all of the pieces have been matched, players look at the image they have created and notice that it spells out the word, “door”. This is the final word for the recording sheet.

The recording sheet now reads, “Look around the main door”

Completion Certificate

Players have now solved each of the puzzles and retrieved one word from each clue. Players now have to Look Around the Main Door. This door can be a front door to your home, a door for the main entrance to a school or any main door.

If players check a door that you did not consider the main door, don’t worry, it encourages players to think about what other doors could be the main ones and check another location. Trial and error is part of every escape room!

Around the main doors, set the completion certificates along with any treats or prizes that you want players to have. The initial clue suggests that all of the players treats have been stolen. These treats may be candy or they can simply be a fall treat such as a fall craft or pumpkin! It’s up to you what you place at the main door for players to find!

The completion certificate is also a great way for players to celebrate, and remember their win. I loved using this game at school because the certificate was a great way to get kids talking about our fall escape room adventure and sharing their activity from the day.

I hope your group enjoy their fall escape room as much as my kids and students have over the years!

Although it is a fall escape room, I often use it as a Halloween escape room game with my students and children. It works well for children to work in small groups to solve the puzzles and then race to the main door for a prize! It’s a great way to keep kids engaged and learning during a very exciting time of year.
