Acrostic poems are created by using one focus word and printing it down the side of the page. Writers then think of a word or sentence that relates to the focus word for each letter. For example, if the word is ANIMAL, the A could stand for alligator, the N could be narwhal, I could be iguana and so on until the word is complete.

Below is an example acrostic poem for the word summer:

Another common topic for acrostic poems and a great way to introduce this type of poetry is by having children using their name. Kids then have to think of a word that describes themselves for each letter of their name.

Using the Free Templates

A great way to use the templates is to offer children a choice of which one they want to complete (depending on your focus or intention behind the activity. Children brainstorm and write their chosen words on each page.

This resource also includes several blank templates so that you can use them for any topic. Simply print the one that will fit the word that you want to focus on (3, 4, 5, or 6 letters long). Fill in the boxes with each letter of your chosen word. These templates work well as a way to give kids options for their poetry.

Acrostic poems are a great way for young learners to work on beginning sounds as well. Children look at the initial letter, of the focus word, and then sound it out to find another word that starts with that letter and relates in some way.

If you are creating acrostic poems with older children, you can still use the idea of them placing their name in the boxes and writing about themselves. However, you can make it more challenging by encouraging them to write more than one word for each letter. They can write a full sentence or they can even make each of their sentences rhyme.
