Teaching children to print can be challenging, but it is an essential skill for them to learn. When I started creating my literacy program for kindergarten, I wanted to make sure that I had a variety of resources and activities for the kids to do. Tracing is an important part of learning to print, and forming the letters of the alphabet properly. I created these alphabet tracing worksheets for my students to use on a regular basis to practice printing all of the letters.

The pages include capital and lowercase letters as well as the letters shown in solid or dotted lines for tracing. You can choose any of the pages that work best for your children. The worksheets are perfect for young children because the pages are simple and focus just on the letters.

If you have young children that are working on printing and forming their letters, these tracing pages are simple so that children don’t feel overwhelmed. There are eight pages in the resource that you can choose from. Ideally, children are taught proper letter formation, such as where to start to make each letter, before using the page. I hope that you enjoy this resource as much as my students have over the years.

If you teach the letters in a specific order, the letter page can be used after each lesson. Children can search for and identify the letter being focused on and trace, and then practice the next letter the following lesson.

Teaching the Alphabet

As children learn how to print each of their letters, being able to trace them is helpful. Start by teaching them how to properly form each letter and then continue practicing. Start with lowercase letters and work up to uppercase.

Before giving children the tracing pages, each letter should be taught. A common order to teach the letter in is shown below. Introduce the letter, and letter sound and then model how to form the letter. You can draw it in the air and have children copy you. Once the letter(s) have been taught, then move onto pencil, or dry erase marker to form the letters.

The half pages include each of the pages in half the size so that you can cut the page and give two children a copy. The half pages are also ideal for slightly older children because they will practice printing their letters smaller.

Alphabet Tracing Worksheets

When I used the pages in my classroom, I would print copies and place them in page protectors. Children would then complete the page each day. They used dry erase markers to go over the letters to practice. We started by focusing on lowercase letters and then worked up to uppercase. Personally, I loved providing the dry erase markers because many students preferred using the markers over pencils. They are easy to rub off if they make a mistake and it feels more like play and drawing for kids.

Doing daily review is a great was to keep these skills sharp and build how quickly and easily children can print each letter. Practice is also great for fine motor skills and confidence.

When children first start tracing their letters, it may take a considerable amount of time. That’s okay, and can be great, if they’re taking their time to make each letter properly. As they continue practicing printing the letters you will find that they get faster and faster and will eventually be able to complete the sheet in a minute or two.
