When I first stared using scavenger hunts in my classroom, I noticed how much my students loved them and how engaged they were as they did the hunts. Whether it’s searching inside, outside or both, there’s a lot of learning that happens during these activities.

Children work on their observation skills and team work skills. It’s also a great way to take learning beyond the classroom walls. Search as one big groups, teams or give each child a copy of the hunt.

One of my favorite things about this scavenger hunt is that it was created with young children in mind. I wanted a scavenger hunt that even my preschool and kindergarten aged children could do. With a regular scavenger hunt, young children can’t read the words, however this hunt also includes a picture beside each item. This way children can look at the word and then the picture. This can also help with reading skills.

New Year’s Eve Scavenger Hunt

The scavenger hunt is a great way to keep kids entertained on New Years. Children can work independently to find each of the items or you can make a game of it. Partner kids up, or make small groups and have them compete to find each of the items. Whoever finds everything first, wins.

One of the great things about a scavenger hunt is that you don’t have to find the exact for identical item as the picture. For example, if your area doesn’t have fireworks happening when you’re doing the hunt, maybe children can find them in a popular movie, book or television show.

Free Scavenger Hunt Extension Ideas

Within the file, you will find both black and white and color copies of the scavenger hunt. The color one is great to engage children. The black and white copy is ideal for kids to use during their hunt and then color the images afterwards.

Another great idea for this scavenger hunt is to use it at home and go for a drive or walk to search for each of the items in the hunt. Can you drive and see fireworks? Do you see someone dancing or a large clock? Search the neighborhood for a fun game together.
