Escape rooms are filled with adventure and mystery, but why limit your game to only one room? Turn your whole house into an escape room with this At Home Escape Room Game. Escape rooms are fun to visit, but they are often not created for kids or families in mind.
This printable escape room kit makes a perfect family game night activity. It’s convenient, inexpensive and easy to set up. You can play with a small group, like a family or a group of kids for a party or simply a playdate.
If you’ve never done an escape room before, the game consists of a series of puzzles for players to solve. There can be puzzles that involve math, or even puzzles that require special folding in order for a clue to be revealed. This escape room game is perfect for younger children because it includes tricky clues, but not frustratingly difficult puzzles. The images and theme is cute, not scary.
Children will love being able to solve these puzzles, made just for them. And you can set it up in minutes around you house with no additional materials needed beyond the puzzles.

Escape Room Materials
Make learning fun with this DIY Escape Room at home! You don’t need any locks or any special materials. Simply print and go! The game is ideal to promote problem solving, a growth mindset and critical thinking.
One of my favorite things about this escape room is that all you have to do is print the puzzles, place them in specific locations and then you can play. There is no prep work needed to prepare the puzzles.
This escape room is a bit different from other escape rooms because you don’t play it at a table. The puzzles will take players on an adventure. As each puzzle is solved, the solution will reveal the location of the next clue. Children then race to the location to search for their next clue in order to continue the game.
Locations
The locations for this escape room are:
A Plant
A Cutlery Drawer (where spoons/forks are stored)
A Sink
A Pillow
Stair(s)
A Laundry Basket
As long as you have the above locations and the printable puzzles then you’re ready for this game!
This DIY Escape Room includes 6 printable clues and a completion certificate. The DIY Escape room puzzles include a dot to dot, crossword, a maze, and several more! All of the puzzles featured below are included in the resource along with the set up instructions and solutions to the puzzles.
As you set up your escape room, you can add music or even decorations. You can also choose whether or not to add a time restriction. I generally give one hour for players to complete the room, but if your players are young or inexperienced, then you may choose to give as much time as needed. The welcome letter suggests one hours, but it is your choice.
You can also choose if you want to give players clues/hints. You can limit the number of clues to three, or less or if your players are older you may let them solve all of the puzzles on their own.
At Home Escape Room Puzzle #1
The first puzzle can be placed anywhere for players to find to start the game. You can also choose to simply give players the clue to begin.
Players will read the welcome letter to figure out where to start. After reading it, they may notice that there are some letters that all look a bit different, but similar to each other. These letters are each found within a square.
When players look closely at these letters, and look at them in the order they appear, they find that they spell out a sentence, and the location of the next puzzle. The clue tells players to “Look at the plant”.
Indoor Game for Kids clue #2
One of the challenging things about this escape room is that some of the solutions may have numerous locations for children to search. Clue #2 can be hidden around any plant in the house. If players search around plants upstairs first, and it is hidden downstairs, that’s okay, that’s part of the fun.
Once players find the second clue, around a plant, they will find what appears to be a dot to dot clue. This is a fun puzzle for young children because it is a puzzle type they may recognize. However, it has a twist.
If players simply begin connecting numbers, they will not complete the puzzle properly. Players must also read the tip written backwards at the bottom of the page. It reads, “Skip all numbers with a 3 or 8.”
As players begin to connect the numbers, minus the threes and eights, they will notice that the lines begin to create the image of a spoon and fork. This suggests to players that their next clue will be around where cutlery is located.
DIY Escape Room clue #3
Make sure as you set up each of your puzzles that each of the locations where the clues are placed are safe for all of your players. You know your group best and will be supervising, but make sure that as children search for spoons and forks, knives are not also available for young players.
As children find where the spoons and forks are, they will search around to find the next clue. You can make this, and other, clues much harder by actually hiding each clue in each spot versus setting it somewhere visible.
With the spoons and forks, players will find a maze. This is another familiar puzzles with a twist. As players begin to find their way through the maze, from start to finish, they will find that they have to go through several letters. Players will need to record these letters in order to get their next clue.
There are only four letters that players go through to spell out, “SINK”.
Escape Room at Home Clue #4
Around a sink, the fourth clue will be found. I taped the clue along the base of the sink, but you can choose to hide it more. Once players open it they find a crossword puzzle.
The puzzle includes various images of household items, such as a lamp and phone. Players fill in the name of each of these items. If you have young players who do not know the spelling of these words, there is a word bank included that you can choose to give young players along with the puzzle. The word bank is optional to use.
Once players fill in each of the words, they will find that several of the boxes are shaded in. The shaded boxes now give players six letters to unscramble to find the next clue. The letters, unscrambled are, PILLOW.
Players then race to where a pillow is found in their house. It may be a couch cushion or pillow on a bed. They’ll have to search to find it.
Printable Escape Room Clue #5
Once they find the pillow with the fifth clue, players find what looks like a jumble of lines and markings. They will also notice the clue on the bottom that reads, “Fold to make me smile.” As players wonder what this means, they will notice the blue smiley face, similar to other ones they have seen on the other puzzles.
Players will begin folding the clue so that the two parts of the smiley face match up to make it smile. Once these halves are matched, the mixed up lines seem to come together to create the word, “STAIRS”. Players have solved the puzzle and found the location of their next one.
Indoor Game Clue #6
Players will carefully search any staircase in your home. If you want to make it more challenging, you can place the puzzle on a few stairs off a deck if you have one or stairs leading into a garage.
Place the clue, or tape the clue around a staircase. Once players find it, they will open the puzzle to six images of household rooms. From the kitchen and laundry room to the bath room and bedroom.
This final puzzle is slightly more tricky than the others, but it’s a great way to end the game. The clue suggests that the solution has been “smiling at you in each of your past clues.” Players may look back at the other clues, or they may have noticed as they played that there was a picture of a smiley face on each of the previous clues.
Once players realize that the clue has been the blue smiley face, they will also notice the face on the final clue and notice that it is found in the laundry basket in the image. This suggests that this is where they will find their final clue!
Final Clue #7
Escape Room Completion Certificate
The final location is the laundry basket, or laundry room. Players will not find a puzzle in this spot, but rather a completion certificate.
Placing the final printable in a treasure box, is a fun way to end the game. You can include a small treat or prize along with the completion certificate. You can also print as many copies of the completion certificate you need. One for each player is a great way for kids to celebrate their accomplishment.
Congratulations on completing the game!
