Kids love games and they love being online. Bring both of these together and add some learning with this Free Online Escape Room for Preschool and Kindergarten. If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know that I love escape rooms. I love the problem solving and team building that come from them and I love using them in my classroom and home.
In my classroom, my students always love when they have center time; however, I am mindful to create centers that have a learning component. My students always love when I put a game or activity on the Smart Board for them to explore, but finding an online activity that is simple enough for them to do largely independently and targets skills we are focus on in the classroom is challenging. Plus they are rarely free!
I wanted to create a game that included engaging, but simple graphics, with nothing too distracting or flashy, so I created this online escape room for preschool and kindergarten children.
This online game focuses on literacy skills, such as letter recognition, beginning sounds and rhyming. It’s a mix of a these few essential skills. Kids will love it because it’s online and they can see their progress as they solve each puzzle, by checking the keys at the bottom of each page.

I love using technology in this way because kids are engaged, but more importantly they are learning. If you’re looking for more escape room ideas, to create a hands-on game, check out a huge collection of 40 DIY Escape Room Ideas at Home.
The game looks and works best on a laptop or computer. It can be played on a phone, but the images do not appear in the same, organized way.
Free Online Escape Room
The Great Alphabet Escape
Escape rooms are essentially a series of puzzles. Each puzzle leads to the next until all of the puzzles are solved and players ‘escape’ from the game. There is nothing scary or complicated about the puzzles in this version. Each puzzle is simply a language skill for players to solve. The puzzles/questions are created specifically for young kids.
Children can track their progress by checking, or counting the number of keys at the bottom of the page. After they answer each puzzle successfully, their gain one more key. Once all ten questions are solved, they get the final key and win the game!
Begin your escape room game, by clicking the box at the bottom of this page. Once you click, you will be taken to a page with a short introduction to the game and the story for the escape room.
Click where indicated to go to the first puzzle. The puzzles each ask children to look at the first image and use it to solve/answer the puzzle. The puzzles require players to:
- Find the match of upper case and lower case letters
- Find the beginning letter an animal starts with
- Find the ending letter of an animal name
- Find a rhyming word
- Find missing letters in the alphabet
Each page has the same basic layout. Children know what to expect without being overwhelmed. There are ten questions total.
Each of the puzzles/questions are intentionally simple and cute, without being overwhelming for young children.
The game can be played on a large Smart Board in a classroom or even on a phone. You can work through the questions together as a class or group, or each child can do the questions to challenge what they each know.
Playing the Puzzle Game
With each puzzle question, players have three possible answers. If they click the right answer, they will move onto the next puzzle. If they get it wrong, they will see the page below.
Players can try as many times as needed until they get the right answer, and move on. If they get an answer wrong, they can simply click the arrow to go back and try again.
If your players solve all the puzzles and ‘escape’ quickly, that’s great. It means that they have a solid understanding of the literacy concepts and may be ready for more challenging concepts. It’s great practice and a fun way to learn.
The final puzzle, like many escape rooms is the most challenging. Players must look at the image of a maze of letters, in alphabetical order, except a few of the letters are missing.
Players have to go through the alphabet and figure out which four letters are not included. Once they successfully do this, they win!
Completing the Escape Room
When they get all of the answers correct, they will see the page shown below. They will also notice that they have all ten keys and solved the game.
Below this “You Did It!” page players will notice a box to download an escape room completion certificate. You can download and print as many of these pages as you need. It’s a fun way for kids to celebrate solving all of the puzzles.
It’s also a great item for kids to take home and tell parents about their accomplishment in school. If you have subscribed, through Grow on this site, this download will already be unlocked.
