We’re Going on a Bear Hunt

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt

We’re going on a bear hunt!  After reading the book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”, by Michael Rosen, we discussed the different areas the hunt took them through (ie. the mud, forest).  I then put students into small groups.  Each group was assigned one of the different areas form the book to create a small setting for.  For example, the group responsible for the mud painted their page in brown paint that had sand mixed in.  This gave it the look of mud. The following day, I laid out the props they created and we walked through the school and through the different...

Random Acts of Kindness for Kids

Random Acts of Kindness for Kids

This activity is really simple and easy to do, but that’s what I love about it.   I think the idea of kids spreading inspiration, building each other up and getting in the habit of doing random acts of kindness is very important.  I gave my group of grade 4’s the job of coming up with a few inspirational quotes.  They used these quotes to write and decorate on our tarmac area outside.  Although I used it at school, it would be a great activity to do to show gratitude and send positive messages outside of a school setting.  Writing positive...

Mental Health Lessons for Kids

Mental Health Lessons for Kids

We all need a reminder of the important things in life sometimes.  I started with a large clear jar and enough Styrofoam balls to fill it.  As I put them in, I told students that they represented the big things in their lives, like their family and close friends, their health and well being.  I then asked them if the jar was full (“yes”).

Kindergarten Drama Games

Kindergarten Drama Games

It’s a baseball bat!  It’s a fairy wand!  No, it’s a boat!  Drama is a popular activity with teachers and students and it is always one of my favourites.  I took the classes that I cover kindergarten prep for outside to do some drama games with them.  We found a comfortable spot to sit as a group and using a broom handle I tell students the story of my great-great-great grandfather Jack: Jack did not always listen to his mother very well and one day when he went to the market, he got some seeds instead of what his mother had asked him to...

Outdoor Art – Forest Creations

Outdoor Art – Forest Creations

I love being outside and my kids love art.  We end up creating a lot of outdoor art.  On a beautiful day, children collected materials as we walked around the yard.  They were challenged to create a small house or structure for a small critter. They then created a small house using just the materials they collected, which turned into a whole village.  It was quite the creation.  I love the idea of creating outdoor art using only the materials around them.  They were so proud of what they made.  I was really impressed by the variety of materials that students...

Sock Puppet Fun for Kids

Sock Puppet Fun for Kids

Who doesn’t enjoy playing with sock puppets?  One of the classes I cover prep for were exploring an inquiry on puppets.  I really wanted to give students the chance to hold and move their own puppet.  I created a very basic sock puppet for each student.  (I was able to find 6 pairs for $1.25 at a local dollar store.)  We explored the basics to puppetry, ie. how to hold the puppet, how to create a mouth that moves etc. and then they decided on a name for their puppet. The noses on the puppets were pompoms, and there were 6 of each colour. ...
