I am always looking for ways to make math fun and hands-on. This is such a simple craft and holiday math activity for young kids. It would work well as a small centre in a classroom or even as a gift.
We started by painting some small wooden cubes green. My kids added one yellow one (with sparkles) for the top. After they were dry, we added the numbers 1-27. For younger kids, you could make the tree smaller and number them from 1-15 or any number you choose. For older kids and grades, you could number blocks to 100 and see what they can create.
My kids started by simply putting all of the numbers in order. It was great counting practice to create this number line. Once they had their numbers, they then created their Christmas tree.
I kept the tree very simple, but you could add more numbers and blocks by adding a tree trunk. I like the fact that in order to successfully create the tree takes problem solving and trial and error. In order to get the tree made correctly kids will have to try a few times to put the correct number of blocks in each row. It is so simple, but a great way to get kids practicing their numbers and counting, while having fun!
